What is An Australian Labradoodle?

BAMBI

🐾 PLEASE READ – VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION

When searching for your perfect puppy—on the internet, pet-selling sites, or social media—it can be overwhelming and often very misleading........

A Multi-generational Australian Labradoodle is not:

  • A Labradoodle

  • A Double Doodle

  • A Bernedoodle

  • A Goldendoodle

  • A Maltipoo

  • A Cavapoo

  • Or any mix where only one parent is an Australian Labradoodle

Many adverts falsely claim puppies are “Australian Labradoodles” when, in fact, they are not. As a buyer, it’s vital that you understand the difference—so you don’t end up with a dog that lacks the health testing, predictability, and temperament this breed is known for.

🧬 What Is a True Australian Labradoodle?

The Australian Labradoodle has been in development for over 40+ years. It originated in the 1980s when Wally Conran, of Royal Guide Dogs, bred a Labrador and a Poodle to create a hypoallergenic guide dog AKA 'Labradoodle'. While this produced the first Labradoodle, it lacked the desired consistency in coat, temperament, and size.

It was the Australian breeders at Tegan Park and Rutland Manor who took Wally’s foundation and introduced four additional breeds to improve the Labradoodle’s structure, temperament, and allergy friendliness. They developed what we now know as the Australian Labradoodle—a purpose-bred service and family dog.

Authenticity Matters

Only a pairing of:
Australian Labradoodle × Australian Labradoodle
produces a genuine Multi-generational Australian Labradoodle; refers to ALD's whose parents, grandparents and G-grandparents are all Australian labradoodles themselves, bred over multiple 3+ generations to consistently produce the desired breed.

At Lexacious Australian Labradoodles, our lines are multi generational and trace directly back to Tegan Park and Rutland Manor. All of our breeding dogs are registered with WALA (Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association) and meet their stringent requirements for:

  • Health testing

  • DNA profiling

  • Ethical breeding practices

🧬 What Is a DNA Profile?

A DNA profile is your dog’s unique genetic fingerprint. It:

  • Confirms parentage

  • Ensures lineage integrity

  • Cannot be altered, lost, or destroyed

If a breeder hasn’t DNA-profiled their dogs or cannot show registration with an organisation like WALA, you should be extremely cautious. Unverified breeding can lead to serious inbreeding risks, resulting in poor health outcomes and long-term veterinary costs.

🔎 All of our breeding dogs at Lexacious are DNA profiled and health tested in line with WALA standards. Full test results are available upon request.

📉 Why COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) Matters

The COI measures how genetically related the parents of a litter are. Under WALA guidelines, a COI of less than 5% is required to reduce the risk of inherited health conditions. Many other unregistered doodle mixes such as; Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles, F1, f2 labradoodles, and other designer doodle crosses do NOT  have a centralised pedigree database like WALA to check the COI when planning to breed/mate their dogs. Without this:

  • It is impossible to track lineage and calculate a safe COI %

  • They can't ensure they are not inbreeding which increases the risk of genetic health issues and higher costs to you!

  • There is less consistency in coat types, temperament, & size

  •                                   🚨 Do your research—on the breed and especially on the breeder.

✂️ Coat Types

There are three coat types, each with different allergy suitability:

  1. Hair

    • Found in early generations (F1, F1b, F2)

    • Flat, coarse, lightly shedding

    • Least suitable for allergy sufferers

  2. Fleece (Wavy/Curly)

    • Soft, silky, spiral or wavy

    • Low to non-shedding

    • Typical of multi-generational ALDs

    • Best for most allergy-sensitive families

  3. Wool

    • Dense, curly, similar to Poodle texture

    • Non-shedding

    • Best for severe allergy sufferers

⚠️ Important: No dog is 100% hypoallergenic. People can also be allergic to saliva, not just dander.
We strongly recommend that allergy-sensitive individuals meet one of our dogs in person before making a decision.
